"Scholars read the great words of the world. But you and I must learn to read the world itself.”
-Linda Sue Park, A Single Shard
Woodland Star School is a small, international school surrounded by the green grass of one of the most beautiful spots in Eastern Africa. Brackenhurst Conference Centre, located among the tea fields in Limuru, Kenya, is the host facility of Woodland Star School, and affords the school not only an environmentally rich setting but a host of amenities including food and internet services that support the life of the school.
The pastoral setting of the school complements the unique approach of the school, which places emphasis upon the individual child and his or her personal development in the pursuit of excellence in education. At Woodland Star, instruction is child-centred and individually differentiated, with teaching methods that present information in many ways and assessments that measure each student’s progress and inform instructional approaches and modifications.
Woodland Star School is a place of respect for the individual and value for diversity in the midst of dynamic cultural and interpersonal exchange. Woodland Star School strives to enable and empower students to become knowledgeable and learned citizens of the world, understanding and absorbing the “great words of the world” but also independent thinkers who are able to “read the world itself.”
To reach these aims, Woodland Star School presents learning in connection to the world and posits that real learning happens when the learner is able to fit the pieces of the academic puzzle into a meaningful whole. Integration of the disciplines is favoured rather than a fragmentation of content into separate subjects. Intelligence is accepted as multifaceted and nurtured accordingly. Creativity is encouraged and developed. And, the human potential of staff and students is understood as limitless.
We believe that we are all teachers and learners in this greater classroom; each one of us has a unique and dynamic position in the human narrative. At Woodland Star School, we champion the opportunity to play a pivotal role in the continuing development of this human narrative as we touch the lives of children and prepare them for the world to come.
